Robbie Williams biopic in the works – Music News

‘The Greatest Showman’ director Michael Gracey is set to helm ‘Better Man’, a coming of age about Robbie’s unlikely rise to stardom.

The flick will tell the story of Williams’ ascent to fame, exploring the experiences that made him who he is and the demons he battled on and off stage as he became a huge star on the back of hits with Take That and solo success.
Michael has penned the script for the project with Oliver Cole and Simon Gleeson. He is also producing with Jules Daly and Craig McMahon with production slated to begin this summer. Robbie’s hit songs are part of the film’s package.

Gracey revealed that the movie came about after hours of conversations with Robbie although he remained tight-lipped on how the singer would be represented on the big screen.

The filmmaker told Deadline: “As for how we represent Robbie in the film, that bit is top secret.

“I want to do this in a really original way. I remember going to the cinema as a kid and there were films that blew me away and made me say as I sat there in the cinema,’ I’ve never seen this before.’ I just want the audience to have that feeling.

“All I can say is that the approach is top secret, but the goal is to generate that feeling I just described. It’s this fantastical story, and I want to represent it in its harsh reality all the way to these moments of pure fantasy.”

Robbie first became famous as a teenager in Take That but after quitting the boy band in 1995 his career really soared as a solo artist with hits such as ‘Angels’, ‘Rock DJ’ and ‘Let Me Entertain You’ and Michael is keen to chronicle the story of an “everyman”.

He explained: “Unlike some people who were born prodigies or musical geniuses and you follow the narrative of the world catching up to their brilliance, this isn’t that story.

“Robbie is that everyman, who just dreamed big and followed those dreams and they took him to an incredible place. Because of that, his is an incredibly relatable story. He’s not the best singer, or dancer, and yet, he managed to sell 80 million records worldwide.”

The Horrors return with first new music in four years – Music News

The indie band – made up of Faris Badwan, Rhys Webb, Tom Furse, Joshua Third and Joe Spurgeon – released their new single, ‘Lout’, a heavy industrial track, which is taken from their upcoming three-song EP of the same name.

A departure from their most recent music, including 2017 LP, ‘V’ – which was produced by studio wizard Paul Epworth – the group have self-produced the mini album.

Frontman Faris explained why the band have headed back in an “aggressive” direction.

He said in a statement: “’Lout’ is about the relationship between choice and chance, compulsive risk-taking and pushing your luck. As a band, particularly live, we’ve always had an aggressive side and as we began writing new songs it became clear that we were heading in that direction.”

Keyboardist Tom said: “There’s something about it which feels like a return to a heavier sound but really it’s a million miles away from anything we’ve done.

“Keeping the sound aggressive and the beats heavy was a central tenet, everything seemed to fall around that.”

While bassist Rhys Webb hailed ‘Lout’ – which was recorded remotely amid the COVID-19 pandemic – as “the nastiest music we’ve made” since their 2007 debut studio album, ‘Strange House’.

He continued: “An intense barrage of industrial noise. A return to the spirit and attitude of our debut LP but blasted into the future.”

To mark the new era, The Horrors have accompanied the single’s release with a short film helmed by Jordan Hemingway, which stars beauty executive Isamaya Ffrench and is scored by guitarist Joshua and Tom.

‘Lout’ the EP is out on March 12.

The track-listing for ‘Lout’ the EP is:

1.’Lout’
2. ‘Org’
3. ‘Whiplash’

MF DOOM petition launched to rename New York street after late rap legend – Music News

A petition has been launched to rename a New York street after the late rap legend MF DOOM.

The ‘KMD-MF DOOM Way Committee’ has started the Change.org appeal, which calls for the block between Riverside Boulevard and Long Beach Road on East Hudson Street in Long Beach to be named in DOOM’s honour, as he grew up in the area.

The petition reads: “Hip-hop leaders credit Mr. Dumile [DOOM’s real name was Daniel Dumile] as one of the most prolific rap artists of all time. His life served as an example of inclusive community building and growth through individual struggle. Long Beach profoundly influenced his adolescence.

“People of various backgrounds and cultures worldwide recognise him as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, underground hip-hop artist of all time. Mr. Dumile’s ability to unite people across cultures started as a youth in Long Beach.

“Long Beach should be proud of its native son and honour him and his legacy on a street sign. Just as important, the city should embrace the unity Mr. Dumile represents for generations to come. (sic)”

The petition has amassed over 600 signatures at the time of writing.

DOOM – whose real name was Daniel Dumile – passed away on October 31, aged just 49, a statement by his family confirmed two months later.

The likes of Busta Rhymes, Lupe Fiasco and Thom Yorke were among those to pay tribute to the hip-hop icon upon the tragic news of his passing.

The former hailed DOOM – who he had frequently collaborated with since their 1991 track ‘Nitty Gritty Remix’ with his group KMD – a “God MC and incredible human being”

While the Radiohead frontman said he was a “massive inspiration”.

He wrote: “He was a massive inspiration to so many of us.

“The way he put words was often shocking in it’s genius (sic)”

Dee Snider brands Rock and Roll Hall of Fame committee members ‘arrogant elitist a******s’ – Music News

The Twisted Sister frontman has hit out at the illustrious establishment and accused them of looking down on “metal” and “other bands”.

Snider’s snide remarks were in response to a Twitter follower asking why the likes of Iron Maiden would refuse to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

He fumed: “The RnR Hall committee members are arrogant elitist a******* who look down on metal & other bands that sell millions because we’re not their definition of cool. The fan vote is their “throwing a bone” to the peasants. I want to say FU, but I want them to have to deal with us! (sic)”

He also told another follower, who insisted they “cater to the masses”, that: “If they were catering to the masses they would have the biggest selling bands. Corporate rock bands that sell tens of millions are ignored because they aren’t “cool”. The fact is the RnR Hall of Fame is struggling. Was it crowded when you were there? It wasn’t when I went. (sic)”

Iron Maiden are among the nominees this year, but, in 2018, frontman Bruce Dickinson insisted he would refuse the honour if the ‘Run to the Hills’ rockers were ever chosen.

He said: “I’m really happy we’re not there and I would never want to be there. If we’re ever inducted, I will refuse — they won’t b***** be having my corpse in there.”

The likes of Foo Fighters, New York Dolls, Kate Bush and Carole King are among the nominees this year.

Music and film stars call on Boris Johnson to ban UK fur sales – Music News

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has received a letter signed by 50 of Britain’s biggest stars, including Dame Judi Dench, Brian May CBE, Leona Lewis, Gary Lineker OBE, James Arthur, Thandie Newton OBE, Alesha Dixon, Ricky Gervais, Mollie King and Dame Twiggy Lawson, urging him to implement a UK ban on the sale of real animal fur. Animal protection organisation Humane Society International/UK which leads the #FurFreeBritain campaign in collaboration with other animal charities, is hopeful that a 2021 ban is possible now that the Brexit transition is completed.

Fur farming was banned in Britain almost two decades ago in 2003 as it was deemed too cruel. But since then Britain has imported more than £800 million worth of fur from countries including Finland, China, France and Poland, where animals experience severe suffering and distress on fur farms. This is a double standard that needs to end.

The letter which is also signed by Amanda Holden, Simon Pegg, Joanna Lumley OBE, Laura Whitmore, Natalie Imbruglia, Sir Mark Rylance, Imelda Staunton CBE, Deborah Meaden and Shirlie and Martin Kemp, reads: “As long as Britain allows the sale of cruel fur from overseas, we remain complicit in an industry that causes immense animal suffering, environmental harm, and also presents risks to human health through the spread of deadly viruses. It is not enough to say that we have banned fur cruelty from our own back yard, we must stop outsourcing that same cruelty from overseas”

Read the letter in full here.

The following celebrities have added their names as signatories: Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden, Amy Jackson, Anna Chancellor, Brian May CBE, Chris Packham CBE, Deborah Meaden, Evanna Lynch, Fearne Cotton, Gabrielle Aplin, Gaby Roslin, Gail Porter, Gary, Lineker OBE, Imelda Staunton CBE, James Arthur, Jasmine Harman, Jilly Cooper CBE, Joanna Lumley OBE, FRGS, Jon Richardson, Johnny Marr, Dame Judi Dench CH DBE FRSA, Laura Whitmore, Leona Lewis, Lily Cole, Lucy Watson, Sir Mark Rylance, Martin Kemp, Megan McCubbin, Mollie King, Natalie Imbruglia, Nicholas Hoult, Paul O’Grady MBE, Pete Wicks, Peter Egan, Rafferty Law, Ricky Gervais, Rula Lenska, Rumer, Sadie Frost, Scarlett, Moffatt, Shirlie Kemp, Sian Clifford, Simon Pegg, Sue Perkins, Thandie Newton OBE, Tiffany Watson, Tracy Edwards MBE, Dame Twiggy Lawson DBE, Victoria Summer and Will Poulter.

The stars have signed the open letter in support of the #FurFreeBritain campaign run by animal charities Humane Society International/UK, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (UK), FOUR PAWS UK, Open Cages, RSPCA, Animal Aid, Viva! And Brian May’s Save Me Trust.

Last autumn, Defra Minister Lord Goldsmith stated that “Fur farming has rightly been banned in this country for nearly 20 years and at the end of the transition period we will be able to properly consider steps to raise our standards still further. That is something the Government is very keen to do.” The campaign has also received cross party political support from 140 MPs who have signed Early Day Motion 267 against real fur imports.

Claire Bass, executive director of Humane Society International/UK, said: “Fur is cruel and unnecessary, and a fur sales ban would command support from the vast majority of the public, politicians, designers and retailers. This letter from some of the country’s top celebrities proudly backing a ban on fur cruelty sends a clear message to Boris Johnson that Britain must no longer be an accomplice in the suffering of millions of animals for frivolous fur fashion. When the selling stops, the suffering will too.”

Singer and songwriter Alesha Dixon says, “Britain’s decision two decades ago to ban cruel fur farming, has been an inspiration to numerous other countries that have followed our compassionate lead. But for as long as we allow fur to be sold in UK shops from animals who have suffered overseas, the UK is still responsible for fur cruelty. So now it’s time for us to show world leadership once again by banning fur sales. Britain’s got compassion, and with a fur sales ban we have the power to stop animals suffering for fashion.”

Comedian, actor and director Ricky Gervais says, “Banning the sale of fur in the UK doesn’t even require debate, it’s a no brainer. Should the UK be selling fur from animals who have been anally electrocuted, gassed to death, beaten to death, and may even have had COVID-19? No it shouldn’t, let’s get the ban done.”

Elisa Allen, director, Peta UK says, “The overwhelming majority of British people oppose the fur trade, in which animals are gassed, electrocuted, and even skinned alive. We’re calling on the government to seize this opportunity to take a stand against needless cruelty and be a world leader by creating a fur-free Britain.”

Hannah Baker, FOUR PAWS UK head of communications, says, “The UK public has repeatedly spoken out about their detestation of the fur industry. Today with the added weight of over 50 celebrities we are once again calling for an end to this cruel trade in which animals unnecessarily suffer, all in the name of so-called fashion. The Government cannot continue to ignore the calls for us to finally put animal welfare first and embrace more compassion in fashion by becoming a fur-free Britain.”

Heidi Allen, RSPCA director of advocacy and policy, says, “As a compassionate nation of animal lovers, we know it isn’t enough to simply ban fur farming at home. If we want to continue leading the way, then we must also say “no” to any activity connected with this barbaric, cruel and inhumane use of animals. The RSPCA is therefore proud to add its name to this campaign to end the sale of fur in Britain. Not only is it the right thing to do, it would also demonstrate our global and moral leadership as we strive towards a world totally free of fur farming”.

The British public can support the campaign by signing the petition at www.furfreebritain.uk

Ellie Goulding expecting first child – Music News

Ellie Goulding and her husband Caspar Jopling are expecting their first child.

The Burn singer revealed she is 30 weeks pregnant in an interview with Vogue.co.uk, and she admitted it came as something of a surprise.

“I was pregnant and had no idea,” she told British Vogue. “That was (around) the time when Caspar and I went away briefly when we were allowed to for our one-year anniversary, and that’s basically when we found out. It was crazy because it was our one-year anniversary. That was not the plan.

“The thought of getting pregnant didn’t seem like it could be a reality. Becoming pregnant kind of made me feel human. I want a better word than womanly, (but) I have curves I’ve never had before. I’m enjoying it. My husband’s enjoying it.”

The singer, who loves fitness, admitted she’s been craving sugar and carbs, unlike her usual healthy diet.

“I actually went from being smug about how healthy my salads were and my breakfasts and eating nuts and seeds, and then all I wanted was McDonald’s,” she said. “And I was kind of terrified, I suddenly wanted all of the bad things! Whatever this baby did when it took over, my body was like, hell no, I do not want broccoli, spinach, collards! I just wanted sugar and carbs.”

The Army hitmaker didn’t reveal the gender of her baby but admitted she does know the baby’s sex.

“We found out by default because we had a scan. (But) it wasn’t a thing. We just wanted a healthy baby and there wasn’t much more to it. Instinctively, the whole gender reveal is not my thing,” she shared.

Goulding and Jopling got married in August 2019.

Justin Bieber surprised fans with a special set at ‘Stream On’ virtual launch event – Music News

Justin Bieber surprised fans with a special set at Spotify’s ‘Stream On’ virtual launch event on Monday (22.02.21).

The ‘Yummy’ hitmaker performed a three-song set of his recent hit singles; ‘Holy’, ‘Anyone’ and ‘Lonely’.

For the intimate rendition of ‘Holy’, the pop superstar sang surrounded by candles in a bar setting.

The Grammy-winner then appeared on a faux road in the middle of the desert for ‘Lonely’, before he wrapped with an electronic-tinged spin on ‘Anyone’ with his band performed from a VR platform surrounded by mountains.

Justin commented: “I want to thank my friends at Spotify for asking me to perform exclusively at Stream On. This event is a first, so I wanted to do something I hadn’t done before with this special version of ‘Lonely’.

I’m always inspired by creativity, and Spotify ‘Stream On’ shared some incredible conversations on the vision for the future.”

The likes of J Balvin, Jemele Hill, Khalid, BLACKPINK, FINNEAS and Billie Eilish, Ava DuVernay, Halsey, Lauv, Bruce Springsteen, and even President Barack Obama also appeared.

The streaming giant’s ‘Stream On’ series is about “exploring the power of audio creation”.

Justin’s performance came after he made history as the first artist in the world to play a TikTok concert.

The ‘What Do You Mean?’ hitmaker performed songs from his 2013 digital-only compilation album ‘Journals’ as part of the ‘Journals Live From The Drew House’ live-stream on Valentine’s Day (14.02.21).

He said: “I’m excited to bring this show to life. ‘Journals’ is one of my favourite projects and I’ve never performed it live. I’m grateful to TikTok for helping me to bring this show to everyone on Valentine’s Day.”

Meanwhile, Justin recently gave an update on the progress of his sixth studio album.

The 26-year-old superstar shared snaps from the studio across Instagram and teased fans that he’s got to the stage of picking the track-listing for the LP.

Alongside one picture of him staring at sheets of paper, he wrote: “going over track listing for the album. (sic)’
He also captioned a black and white shot of him with his mouth wide open: “how this album makes me feel (sic).”

Justin released his most recent record, ‘Changes’, last February, before he kicked off his “new era” with ‘Holy’, ‘Lonely’ and ‘Anyone’.

Stream Justin’s full ‘Stream On’ performance over on Spotify’s official YouTube channel.
