Sir Mick Jagger narrates a poignant short film to mark the Royal Albert Hall’s 150th birthday – Music News

The Rolling Stones frontman, 77, reads from WH Auden’s poem ‘For Friends Only’ in the 90-second clip titled ‘Your Room Will Be Ready’, which is an emotional watch for music lovers amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as it shows both the legendary London venue empty and filled to the brim with fans.

The concert hall holds special memories for the ‘Satisfaction’ hitmakers, who have played the venue four times, including in September 1963, when they shared a bill with The Beatles.

Jagger commented: “Without doubt the Royal Albert Hall is one of the greatest concert venues in the world and so I was delighted to be asked to read a short poem by W.H. Auden as part of this excellent short film by Tom Harper.

“I have some wonderful memories of performing there with The Stones in the 1960s when once or twice it did get a bit wild, with enthusiastic fans joining us onstage and almost bringing the show to an abrupt end – but we soldiered on and had a great time.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Royal Albert Hall a very happy 150th birthday and look forward to the future, seeing and listening to many fantastic artists and musicians performing onstage at this iconic venue.’’

The Tom Harper-helmed clip also includes more than 40 pieces of concert archive footage dating back to 1933, some never-before-seen, including performances by the likes of Dame Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross, Noel Gallagher, the late George Michael, Freddie Mercury and Luciano Pavarotti, and Stormzy and Wizkid.

Harper added: “I have desperately missed live performance – there is something electric and fundamentally human about the shared experience of being in a room surrounded by other people, part of an audience. The Royal Albert Hall is a magnificent building even when it’s empty, but what makes it truly special is the connection it fosters through those shared experiences. That is what this film is about; not only a celebration of performances from the Hall’s glorious past, but also the sense of anticipation of some of the things to look forward to when we can be together again.”

The previously unseen footage includes clips of Creedence Clearwater Revival and the late Jimi Hendrix and Chris Cornell.

The film was recorded at Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler’s British Grove Studios, and features an original score by Tippett Quartet, flautist Eliza Marshall and BBC Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Philip Cobb.

Composer Steven Price added: “It was a huge honour to reunite with Tom Harper to make this short film, which takes us from the empty corridors of the last months to the joy of the Hall at its glorious best. I can’t wait to be back, listening, laughing, celebrating and experiencing everything the Hall has to offer.”

Bruce Springsteen teams with Barack Obama on new Born in the USA podcast – Music News

Bruce Springsteen and former U.S. leader Barack Obama have teamed up to launch a podcast series.

Renegades: Born in the USA will feature the rocker and the politician in conversation, covering fatherhood, the state of America, and race issues over eight episodes.

It marks the second original podcast from Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, which launched with Michelle Obama’s hit podcast.

The new show debuted on Spotify on Monday.

“How did we get here? How could we find our way back to a more unifying American story? That topic came to dominate so many of my conversations last year – with Michelle, with my daughters and with friends,” Obama says in the opening episode. “And one of the friends just happened to be Mr. Bruce Springsteen.

“On the surface, Bruce and I don’t have a lot in common. But over the years, what we’ve found is that we’ve got a shared sensibility. About work, about family and about America. In our own ways, Bruce and I have been on parallel journeys trying to understand this country that’s given us both so much. Trying to chronicle the stories of its people. Looking for a way to connect our own individual searches for meaning and truth and community with the larger story of America.”

Soundgarden hit back at Vicky Cornell’s legal action – Music News

Rockers Soundgarden are pushing back against Chris Cornell’s widow over her attempt to secure a buyout offer from the remaining bandmembers.

Vicky Cornell, who serves as her husband’s estate representative, filed suit against Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, and Ben Shepherd last week, asking a Washington judge to order a formal valuation of the band partnership to determine how much Chris’ share is worth.

She claimed they offered her just $300,000 (£216,000) to buy out her stake in the brand, but she believes they’ve severely undervalued her share with the “lowball” figure.

However, according to Billboard, the surviving Soundgarden stars have insisted Vicky hasn’t detailed the full story, issuing a statement which read: “(The) buyout offer that was demanded by the estate has been grossly mischaracterized and we are confident that clarity will come out in court.”

They also addressed her claims of the band members receiving lucrative offers from outside investors, who are keen to obtain the rights to the group’s master recordings, insisting: “All offers to buy out our interests have been unsolicited and rejected outright.”

The rockers previously made it clear their stance isn’t about money, and they have since hinted at plans to return to the studio to complete the project they had been working on before Cornell committed suicide in 2017.

“Being a band from Washington State since 1984, we are proud of Soundgarden’s musical legacy, work and career,” they concluded, adding: “we look forward to completing the final Soundgarden album.”

Vicky’s attorney, Marty Singer, has fired back at the trio, declaring: “The band’s contention that this dispute is somehow not about the money for them is absurd and hypocritical.”

Azealia Banks engaged – Music News

Rapper Azealia Banks is engaged.

The controversial and outspoken star showed off her new ring on Instagram on Monday, revealing she and branding expert and conceptual artist Ryder Ripps are planning to wed.

She even suggested she had converted to Judaism – her new fiance’s faith.

“I’m crying,” she wrote.

“I’m Jewish now. MAZEL TOV B**CHES! WE IN HERE… YERRRRRRR,” the 212 hitmaker added.

Ryder shared a similar image of his fiancee’s hand to his own Instagram page. It’s not clear how long the pair have been together, however Azealia hinted earlier this month that they were dating, after sharing a video of her and Ryder walking together holding hands.

The engagement news comes just weeks after Azealia made headlines for digging up her dead cat and boiling the body, explaining it was part of the process of taxidermy, which she’s interested in.
