Queen’s Roger Taylor brands Brexit a ‘dreadful retrograde step’ for musicians and their crews – Music News

The 71-year-old drummer is the latest musician to speak out on post-Brexit touring, after they were left out of the Brexit trade deal, meaning they may have to acquire a visa for every European country they wish to perform in, a policy which could lead to artists being unable to afford playing in the EU.

The ‘We Will Rock You’ hitmaker insisted that while many artists have their music and publishing income to fall back on, touring crews have already been stripped of their earnings amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with touring off due to travel restrictions, and the fact the government has no plans at this time to renegotiate a deal with the EU, could also leave live crews out of pocket.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s ‘The World This Weekend’ show, he said: “Borders are a dreadful invention of mankind, and so we are just putting up another one, and I think it’s a dreadful retrograde step.

Roger – whose band were forced to postpone their European tour twice as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic – continued: “I know our road crew, all the guys that make our touring work, they are the one that have suffered.

“Not so much for the artists, we can fall back on our songwriting and our publishing, they can’t. It’s a daily, weekly job for them and so it’s made it really hard for our industry, very hard indeed.”

Roger’s comments come after Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood implored the UK government to “renegotiate its provision” for touring post-Brexit.

While Sir Elton John has also called for a “short-term fix” to make it easier for British musicians to tour in Europe.

Daft Punk split up – Music News

The electronic duo – whose real names are Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo – have announced their split via a dramatic video titled ‘Epilogue’.

In the video, the French duo – who are widely considered to be one of the most influential groups of recent decades – are seen sporting their trademark space helmets and leather jackets.

During the scene, one of the group looks at the other and reveals an energy pack on their back.

Then, the other member touches a button on the pack and a big explosion takes place.

The eight-minute video clip cuts to an image captioned “1993-2021” – in recognition of the group’s lifespan – before the scene transitions to a setting sun.

A spokesperson for Daft Punk has confirmed their split to Variety, although it remains unclear if they may work together again under different names or on other projects.

The duo have worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry over the years, including the likes of Pharrell Williams and Kanye West.

Daft Punk released their last album, ‘Random Access Memories’ – which featured Nile Rodgers and Pharrell – in 2013, and it proved to be a critical and commercial success.

The acclaimed record actually won in several categories at the 2014 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Best Dance/Electronica Album, and Best Engineered Album.

Since then, however, the electronic duo have largely kept a low profile and it now remains to be seen whether they’ll ever record together again.

Demi Lovato hopes docu-series helps others struggling with sobriety – Music News

Demi Lovato went public with her near-fatal drug overdose and recovery in a hard-hitting new docu-series in the hope her story will help others.

In Demi Lovato: Dancing With The Devil, the popstar details her sobriety battle following her 2018 relapse, which sent her to the hospital and led to a lengthy rehab stay, and she’s convinced baring all about her journey could inspire others to confront their demons.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Demi said: “The world has been so loving and accepting of me telling my story and just, there’s been so much love and support. What’s great is we live in a time when nobody’s perfect, and we’re not gonna get role models by watching people not make mistakes.

“We are going to meet and learn from our role models who have overcome their deepest darkest struggles… I wanted to show everyone – first I wanted to set the record straight.

“I just wanted to tell the world, ‘Hey, this is what happened, this is how I got through it, and hopefully this can help you too’, because this journey has been such a wild ride but I’ve learned so much and I can’t wait to share it with the world.”

In a teaser for the new series, the 28-year-old revealed she suffered three strokes and a heart attack, which left her with brain damage, following her overdose.

“My doctors said that I had five to 10 more minutes…,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of lives, like my cat. You know, I’m on my ninth life. I’m ready to get back to doing what I love, which is making music.”

Mogwai lead the race for Number 1 album with ‘As The Love Continues’ – Music News

Mogwai are leading an incredibly close race for Number 1 on this week’s Official Albums Chart with As The Love Continues.

The Scottish post-punk group are Number 1 on today’s Official Chart Update – though just 1,800 chart sales currently separate the Top 3.

Should Mogwai’s tenth studio album continue its momentum, it would be their first to top the Official Albums Chart, and third consecutive Top 10 studio album, following 2014’s Rave Tapes and 2017’s Every Country’s Sun. See where all of Mogwai’s songs and albums have charted in the UK.

Close behind Mogwai are US rock legends Foo Fighters, whose recent chart-topper Medicine At Midnight is continuing to perform well and could pick up a second non-consecutive week at the summit. Rounding out the midweek Top 3 is British rapper Ghetts; his third studio album Conflict of Interest is on track to be his highest charting yet, currently at Number 3.

Ariana Grande’s former chart-topper Positions is on course to return to the Top 5 for the first time since November following the release of its deluxe edition, currently at Number 5 and the most-streamed record of the week so far.

Two new entries vying for a Top 10 slot are Whitesnake compilation The Blues Album (9), and Yorkshire indie band The Reytons’ fourth EP May Seriously Harm You and Others Around You (10).

Thin Lizzy and Black Star Riders vocalist Ricky Warwick could score his first solo Top 40 album with When Life Was Hard and Fast at 15, while British producer and singer SG Lewis is on track for the Top 20 at 19 with his debut album Times.

Editors lead vocalist Tom Smith and former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows reunite as Smith & Burrows for their second collaborative album Only Smith & Burrows Is Good Enough (21), and Nottingham alternative rock band Tindersticks could claim their first Top 40 album since 1999 with Distractions (32).

Finally, Ronan Keating’s latest album Twenty Twenty could return to the Top 40 at Number 35 following the release of his new single with Shania Twain, Forever And Ever, Amen.

Celeste says ‘falling in love’ has made her music more ‘triumphant’ – Music News

The ‘Stop This Flame’ hitmaker has explained how there is “more warmth and sincerity” to some of her songs, as a result of being head-over-heels for model beau, Sonny Hall.

Celeste – who released her debut studio album, ‘Not Your Muse’, last month – told Wonderland magazine: “Something that I experienced this year properly was falling in love.

“So there is more warmth and sincerity to my approach to certain songs as opposed to how I would’ve treated them before which was a bit more sombre and guarded.

“Now it’s like big horns and make it triumphant! There are songs that have come to fruition because emotionally something has occurred in me and I’ve evolved in a way where now I’m clearer on what I feel.”

The 26-year-old singer also admitted that surrounding herself with her band and friends has kept her grounded and reminded her why she loves making music so much.

She added: “Surrounding myself with my band and people who were there only to make good music, it brought me back in touch with why I love making music, without all the outside pressure I was initially naïve to growing up, starting out in the industry.”

The BRIT Award-winner embarked on a relationship with Sonny before the UK went into lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic and recently described the album as her documenting “coming into womanhood”.

She explained: “I think only now, in the last year or so, have I experienced what I can understand as real love.
“All the things I’ve written up until then were confused in a way.

“There’s a lot of love and romance on the album and it’s a picture of me evolving as a person.

“I’m not completely grown up yet, but I guess I would like to describe it as like coming into womanhood.

“I think it’s only in the last two years that I’ve sort of stopped feeling like I’m 21.”
