Dr. Dre passed on deal with Ne-Yo because So Sick star wasn’t ‘hood’ enough – Music News

Rap mogul Dr. Dre passed on a collaboration deal with Ne-Yo, because the So Sick star wasn’t “hood” enough.
Ne-Yo recalls “tripping a little bit” when he scored a meeting with Dre before his career took off, but failed to impress the rap boss with his songwriting talents.

“It was potentially to sign me as an artist, so I go in… He knows that I’m a writer,” Ne-Yo tells Billboard. “Every track that he gave me already had a song on it. He was trying to decide between me and this other artist, whose name I cannot remember right now.

“So he would play the track and say, ‘You think you can write something to this…?’ And then he would play the song that was attached to the track.

“Ultimately, he ended up going with the other guy, ’cause he was a little bit more ‘hood’ than I was.”

But minutes after Dre declined to sign him, Ne-Yo ran into producer Scott Storch, who gave him a huge boost.

“I was feeling a little down,” the 41-year-old singer recalls. “So I run into Scott as I’m leaving, and he’s like, ‘Yo, I don’t know what the hell Dre talking about, but you’re dope. And if you ever find yourself in Miami, look me up…’

“At the time I didn’t know who Scott Storch was. I just knew he played piano. But I didn’t know the slew of hits that he had already had. So my manager gets me down to Miami and he (Storch) just happens to be working for Mario that week. We did, I think, three songs and Let Me Love You was the second song that we did. At the time we knew it was something special, but we had no idea that it was going to do what it did.”

The song turned Ne-Yo into an overnight sensation and led to his career as a singer/songwriter.

“I wasn’t trying to be an artist at this point,” he adds. “After that whole Dr. Dre thing happened, I’m like, ‘All right, clearly I’m not supposed to be an artist. I’m gonna just write for other people’.”

Lady Gaga offers up $500,000 reward over snatched dog attack – Music News

Lady Gaga has offered a $500,000 (£354,000) reward for information about her missing French bulldogs after gunmen made off with the two dogs following an attack on their caregiver.

Ryan Fischer was ambushed close to his home in Hollywood, California as he walked the singer’s pooches, Koji, Miss Asia, and Gustavo.

He was shot in the chest four times, according to police, and the thugs snatched Koji and Gustavo, while Miss Asia ran away. Police officers later discovered Miss Asia, who was collected by the pop star’s bodyguard.

TMZ has since posted surveillance camera footage of the crime.

Gaga’s father, Joe Germanotta spoke with Fox News on Thursday and asked the public to: “Help us catch these creeps”.

“Shooting someone in order to steal dogs is wrong,” he added.

“We’re just sick over it, it’s really horrible,” he later told the New York Post, comparing the theft to the kidnapping of a child.

A rep for Gaga, who is in Italy, has confirmed she is so distraught she has offered $500,000 to get her dogs back, with no questions asked.

Meanwhile, Fischer, who was hospitalised after his attack, is said to be “recovering well”.

Los Angeles Police officials are investigating the attack and dog snatch.

Tory Lanez refused permission to speak openly about Megan Thee Stallion case – Music News

Rapper Tory Lanez has been denied a request to have his gag order relaxed surrounding his involvement in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting case.

Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, was accused of firing a gun at the Savage hitmaker last summer following a dispute as they left a Hollywood Hills party together, resulting in Megan suffering bullet wounds to her feet.

He has since pleaded not guilty to felony assault and firearms charges, but with Megan openly calling Lanez out and sharing her side of the story on social media, he filed a motion in January, seeking permission to respond to the claims, insisting the protective order filed against him, which prohibits the Canadian from publicly commenting on the situation, was “unfair”.

However, the request was slapped down during a hearing at the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles on Thursday.

“We have two high-profile celebrities named as the defendant and the alleged victim in this case,” the judge said, noting “the last thing” anyone wants is for social media remarks to be turned into evidence.

Defence attorney Shawn Holley also raised concerns by alleging one of the witnesses to the shooting has been “intimidated by the complaining witness”, referring to Megan, although she didn’t mention the hip-hop sensation by name.

The judge branded the claim “new issues” and halted further discussion at the hearing, suggesting it should be explored as a separate matter.

After the court date, Holley issued a statement to the New York Post, which read: “We are simply seeking a fair proceeding, which is difficult when (Megan) and her lawyer are able to speak about the evidence in the case, yet we are unable to refute their public statements because of the protective order.”

Chloe x Halle: ‘Beyonce taught us never to dim our light’ – Music News

Chloe x Halle have credited Beyonce for helping them realise they never have to “dim their light”.

The pair have always been supported by the superstar, after she discovered their cover of her hit Pretty Hurts on YouTube in 2015, and she subsequently signed them to her Parkwood Entertainment management company.

Chloe and Halle Bailey opened up about their relationship with Beyonce during an interview with Rolling Stone’s Women Shaping the Future issue, and reflected on what they’ve learned from the Crazy in Love star.

“It’s a hard, hard journey to be in front of everyone, and have to be OK with them saying all these things about you,” they said. “One little thing that you do can be overanalysed by everyone. You have to be strong and not let that get to you. Watching Beyonce do all of those things, rise above all of the madness and just be her talent, is so inspiring.
“She has taught us that it’s OK to be yourself. You could be that wholeheartedly and completely. You don’t have to dim your light. Shine. Be yourself. Be free with it. Stand strong in that power. Because she has done that, she has made us believe that we could do that.”

The siblings added that while they “love and appreciate” Beyonce’s notes on their music, she “barely had any” on their last album Ungodly Hour.

“We were just floored and so happy and appreciative that she loved the project,” they concluded.

Rita Ora felt ‘musically isolated’ in lockdown – Music News

The 30-year-old singer was delighted to get back into the studio to record her new EP ‘Bang’ because things had “got a bit weird” when she was forced to spend months at home without physical contact with her collaborators amid the coronavirus pandemic last year.

Speaking in a behind-the-scenes clip from the making of the EP, she said: “It feels amazing and really good to be back, an actual studio and be around instruments.

“I can also bounce off people’s energy. It got a bit weird I’m not going to lie, musically I felt isolated which I’ve never experienced before.”

However, the ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ hitmaker admitted the time allowed her the opportunity to figure out what she wants to do with her music.

She added: “That really made me write and think a lot about what I want to do musically.”

Rita has teamed up with Kazakh producer and DJ Imanbek for the project and she was “really excited” to try something new with him and is happy with their efforts so far.

She gushed: “He is a really exciting new DJ with hits of his own. I just love his sound and I just wanted to get in touch his brain.

“It just grew into this, ‘Should we do a project?’

“And here we are, seven songs in and we’re almost making a mini movie. It’s really exciting, I’ve never done anything like this before.”

Elsewhere in the video clip, the ‘Anywhere’ singer applied lipgloss so she could “get in the mood” for work.

She admitted: “I can’t work in the studio without having a bit of glamour on, do you know what I mean?”

Michelle Visage: I was ‘born to be the sixth member of Steps’ – Music News

The 52-year-old star has teamed up with the pop group for the single ‘Heartbreak In This City’ and Michelle has relished the collaboration, saying she’s perfectly suited to the band’s unique style.

Michelle said: “I was born to be the sixth member of Steps.”

Michelle acknowledges that her voice is very different to the other members of the group.

However, she now feels like “Michelle from Steps”.

She told OfficialCharts.com: “I’ve done plenty of mainstream Top 40 records, but it’s been a long time.

“For me, it was more about how I was going to fit in with an iconic-sounding group. My voice is very different to their sweet voices. I remember recording my vocals and making sure I wasn’t too loud and show-tuney – I had to remember the pop-ness in my voice and cultivating that.

“I just decided to let go and trust that the producers knew what they were doing. I can hear when I come in and out of the track, but I feel like I blend in really well with them – I definitely feel like Michelle from Steps now.”

Faye Tozer admitted the band had never seriously considered a collaboration before.

But the 45-year-old singer ultimately loved the experience of working with Michelle.

She said: “I don’t think we ever really seriously considered a collaboration with anyone. When you have a band with five members already, it’s like, where do you go with that?

“But this was just so much fun, it was literally just a matter of asking each other, ‘Shall we do this?!’”

Brian May: Gardening helps me beat depression ‘it’s one of life’s great therapies’ – Music News

The 73-year-old star has been busily gardening amid his recovery from the heart attack and stomach haemorrhage he suffered last year, and Brian believes it has helped to keep him in a positive frame of mind over recent months.

Discussing his health problems, he shared: “I thought I’d got sciatica after some tree pruning and heavy lifting, but I think I actually got COVID-19 on tour in the Far East, just ahead of the pandemic reaching the UK.

“I then had a heart attack and the medication for that gave me a stomach haemorrhage, which was the closest I’ve come to death.”

The Queen guitarist considers himself to be a “naturally depressive person”.

However, getting outside and in his garden has helped him over the last 12 months.

Brian told Gardeners’ World Magazine: “It’s central to life.

“I’m conscious that I’m so lucky to have greenery around me – without it I think my brain would explode. It helps me balance.

“I’m naturally a depressive, I’m not a cup-half-full person. I’m someone who tends to feel problems very close-up and gardening is such a help, it’s one of life’s great therapies.”

Despite this, Brian admitted that his love of gardening only started to develop during his adult life.

The music star – who is married to actress Anita Dobson – shared: “As a kid I’d only mowed lawns as a chore, but when I got my own house, 40 years ago, I enjoyed finding out what could be done.

“I love this feeling of being in touch with life. There is something about gardening that grounds you and I don’t mind getting my hands dirty.”

Kelly Clarkson has written 60 songs amid divorce battle – Music News

Kelly Clarkson has written 60 songs since filing for divorce last summer.

The singer split from her manager husband Brandon Blackstock in June, and quickly filed papers to end their seven-year marriage – and it appears the break-up has served as inspiration for Kelly’s creativity.

“I have this record that we’re working on and it’s really great and really honest,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “There’s just a lot of questions that I have to answer before releasing it for myself, whether that be business-wise or personally, or whatever. Whatever happens though, it is such a gift.

“I don’t know how anybody… goes through grief like divorce, any kind of grief, any kind of loss, without having an outlet like this. I have written, like, 60 songs, it is an insane amount of getting it out. I think that’s a blessing in itself. Anytime you go through some life, it’s such an awesome thing to have that outlet, regardless of whether people hear it or not.”

And it’s not just her own music that is inspiring Kelly – her pal and fellow The Voice coach John Legend’s 2020 album, Bigger Love, has been a great source of hope.

“It’s all about that kind of love that you find, that kind of connection you find, and it was so helpful for me,” she added. “Just separately – as a fan, not friend – just to be in a place where you’re hopeless and then to have a record like that, that’s what I’m saying.”

Bonnie Tyler: I’m a ‘rock girl at heart’ – Music News

Bonnie Tyler thinks she’s a “rock girl at heart”.

The 69-year-old singer worked with a host of talented people on her upcoming album ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’, but it was writer Steve Womack that understood which musical style suits her the best.

Speaking to Classic Pop magazine, she said: “Well, I’m a rock girl at heart. And Steve Womack, he just knows what suits me. He’s written some of the great songs on there.

“The title track as well as ‘Stuck To My Guns’ and ‘Call Me Thunder’. Oh my god! I luurvve singing that song, you know, it’s really powerful. It has a real Bruce Springsteen kind of full rock sound.”

However, not all the songs would have been Bonnie’s first choice as when she first heard some of the tunes, she thought she would be too old to sing them.

She explained: “The very first time I heard ‘Call Me Thunder’, I do remember saying to David Mackay, ‘I just love this song, but the lyrics are so young and passionate…’ – I thought that it wouldn’t suit me, but it really does.

“There’s a song on there called ‘I’m Only Guilty (Of Loving You)’ and, oh my god, as soon as I heard that song, it reminds me of the old Stax records, it has a lot of soul in it.”

The ‘I Need A Hero hitmaker reunited with Mackay and bassist Kevin Dunne – who both collaborated with Bonnie on her early records – and thought it was “fate” they were bought back together.

She added: “It’s fate really that we got back together. And you know what, it’s not all about work. At the end of the day, David’s wife cooks a lovely dinner and we have beautiful Champagne and wine. It’s fun!”

Brian McFadden once knocked himself unconscious trying to throw a TV out the window – Music News

The former Westlife singer was trying to be more rock and roll after knocking back the contents of the minibar in his hotel room but his attempt failed miserable when the TV fell on his head and knocked him out cold.

According to The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column, in new book ‘Westlife Uncensored’, he explains: “I went to the minibar, opened it and drank ten of those little bottles straight through, then all the beer. Then I tried to lift up the telly. I wanted to throw it out the window, and it fell on my head.

“I was trying to be a rock star. But it fell a***ways, and I did – that’s how I fell asleep. I went to work the next day and the guys thought, ‘He’s gone mad’.”

Brian, 40, quit Westlife in 2004 in order to pursue a solo career and revealed his former bandmates – Shane Filan, Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne and Mark Feehily – turned down a lucrative offer for them all to reunite.

He said: “I was offered a big multi-million pound deal. It was the other boys in Westlife who said ‘no’. They didn’t want me back.

“How does that make me feel? It makes me pretty upset because I didn’t realise they still had those feelings towards me.”

Shane previously said: “I haven’t seen Brian in ten years. We’ve just lost touch. It’s like going to school with somebody and then not speaking.

“We all had a good relationship with Brian, then he just left the band very early on. And I don’t think we would ever reunite with him. I honestly see Westlife as being four people now. The four people who started and finished Westlife are what I consider the band.”
