Jennifer Lopez: ‘Being snubbed for an Oscar nomination stung’ – Music News

Jennifer Lopez has admitted being overlooked for an Academy Award nomination last year for her role in Hustlers “was a sting”.

The Jenny from the Block singer was hotly tipped for awards success for her acclaimed role as stripper Ramona in the 2019 box office hit, also starring Constance Wu, but she failed to bag a nomination on the Academy Awards shortlist.

“I was talking about this the other day. (My production partner) Elaine (Goldsmith-Thomas) made a post where she listed all the things I had been nominated for and won that season,” Lopez told Allure, referring to the post-Hustlers awards season. “And when it came to the Oscars, it was so obviously absent. It was a sting.”

She continues: “I was like, ‘Okay, when you’re supposedly in everybody else’s mind supposed to be nominated and you’re not, what does that mean? Is it really real? Are the other ones real and this one isn’t?’ It came to a point where I was like, ‘This is not why I do this. I don’t do this to have 10 Oscars sitting on my mantel or 20 Grammys.

“The point is creating and the joy that I get from the things I get to put out in the world that entertain and inspire and empower people…. I think my life is about more than awards.”

Elsewhere in the chat, the mother of two shared how her son, Max, 11, encouraged her to attend a Black Lives Matter protest last year, and the star, who admitted she’s not used to being in big crowds anymore, found the experience a little scary at first.

“(My life is) car to back door to security to this to that. It was scary. I got a little anxiety, like, ‘How do you get out of the crowd?'” she recalled. “Once I got (into it), to be in the masses like that, I loved it. Like, ‘Wow, there’s a movement happening.’ So many people, different ages, races – it was a beautiful thing.”

Bruce Kalmick

HAZEL STREET RECORDS launches under veteran artist manager BRUCE KALMICK of WHY&HOW in a joint label venture with global distributor THE ORCHARD. KALMICK, who launched his management company WHY&HOW, late last year, will serve as CEO of HAZEL STREET RECORDS.

LAURA BENDER, most recently GM of HARD 8 MANAGEMENT/FOLSOM RECORDS, will lead the label as GM, based in NASHVILLE. Prior to HARD 8, BENDER was National Dir./Promotion at ADA.

LESLEY JAMES and MJ MARTY have both been appointed as Dir./Radio And Streaming for the label. JAMES previously spent two years at EAST CITY MANAGEMENT as head of U.S. Radio And Streaming Promotion. Prior to that, she was PD/afternooner at WWCD, LTD. Alternative WWCD/COLUMBUS, OH. MARTY has tenured roles at EPIC, ISLAND DEF JAM, COLUMBIA, and most recently established REALID RECORDS at WARNER MUSIC GROUP.

ANDREW DE TORRES will serve as Dir./Digital And Artist Marketing. DE TORRES spent the last two years at THIRTY TIGERS as Digital Sales Manager. His career in the industry followed years on the road as an artist signed to PHOTO FINISH RECORDS.

“My vision for HAZEL STREET RECORDS is to find undeveloped talent and do the hard work of building career artists,” said KALMICK. “THE ORCHARD is the perfect partner to build this vision with us. We’ve been lucky enough to assemble a team of some of the most creative people in the industry, led by LAURA, who is one of the most innovative and tenacious executives I’ve ever met.”

BENDER added, “When I first began talking to BRUCE nearly two years ago, I was impressed by his passion for finding talent, and his track record is a testament to his long-term commitment and dedication to his artists. We shared a vision of building a label from the ground up as a home to find and develop raw talent. Then 2020 hit, and we were forced to redefine artist development without the prospect of touring. Our artists, in turn, used the time to explore their creative process in new ways, and honed their craft, writing and recording incredible music that we can’t wait to share this year. Through all of it, we are grateful for the support of THE ORCHARD, who were true partners through unprecedented times.”

HAZEL STREET’s roster will span various genres. Alternative Rock band GOLDPARK will release their first single, “Beautiful Desperation,” this FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12th. Alt-pop duo NOX HOLLOWAY are currently working on their debut album.

WHY&HOW management company’s roster includes KALEO, BRELAND, WHISKEY MYERS, and ZZ WARD.

Gabrielle caught the coronavirus in December – Music News

The 51-year-old singer – who finished filming for ‘The Masked Singer’ UK in October and was revealed as Harlequin over the weekend – was left in pain for “about a month” after contracting COVID-19.

She told The Sun newspaper: “I’m slightly asthmatic, so initially it was just a case of feeling like I was breathing through a pinhead, but it was only at times I had to use my inhaler.

“The worst symptoms for me were the headaches. It was excruciating and constant. I was taking painkillers but after a while I had to stop because it wasn’t doing anything. It wasn’t even touching the sides.

“To have a headache like that was awful. I couldn’t even raise my head from the pillows. I was glad to get through, it was about a month of feeling really unwell. But there are people who had it so bad, and those who didn’t make it.”

Gabrielle – who recently dropped new single ‘Stop Right Now’ – is set to release her new album ‘Do It Again’ on March 5.

The new collection will feature songs she performed on the reality show, as well as “five favourite covers” and two new tracks.

She added: “I am so excited. On this album I’ve got five covers from the show. I loved doing the show so much — when I wasn’t hot, and just singing the songs.

“Taking songs from ‘The Masked Singer’ and singing them and covering them was just perfect. I’ve also got five favourite covers that I love, and I’ve added two new songs.

“So I’m just really excited. I’m looking forward to people hearing it for the first time.”

Foo Fighters launch new radio series ‘Medicine At Midnight Radio’ to celebrate latest album – Music News

The ‘Best Of You’ rockers – who released their new LP ‘Medicine At Midnight’ last week – have announced a limited run radio station in collaboration with SiriusXM.

The six-part series kicked off on Monday (08.02.21) on Apple Music, with the first episode focused on bassist Nate Mendel.

Each edition – which airs every day this week at 7pm ET (midnight in the UK) on Apple Music Hits and Foo Fighters Radio – features a different member of the band.

Tonight (09.02.21) is hosted by Chris Shiflett, with Rami Jaffee, Taylor Hawkins, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear following for the rest of the week.

A synopsis reads: “Dave Grohl and the Foos are eager to reconnect with fans from all around the world and share songs filled with, in his words, ‘universal emotions that most people feel.’

“Each band member will take turns hosting hour-long episodes where they’ll go into their personal inspirations and the creative process leading to the album.”

In a statement, Grohl promised to take fans on a journey from the rock group’s formation through to the present day, with “new songs” and tracks which inspired him as a kid.

He said: “We’re going to listen to some music. I’ll tell you some stories, play you some new songs, play you some songs that inspired me when I was young… kind of take you from the beginning all the way up to today.”

The new record – the follow up to 2017’s ‘Concrete and Gold’ – was recorded entirely in a rented house in Los Angeles and producer Greg Kurstin recently revealed it gave them the chance to experiment.

He explained: “We got to really experiment with all these weird locations in the house — we’d set up the drums in the living room or, for ‘Shame Shame’, in the stairwell in like a three-foot-by-three-foot space.

“We played with the sounds, trying the guitar amp in one room or the snare drum in another; the mixing console was up in the bedroom… You’d arrive at the house and some people would be hanging outside. We had a kitchen there. It was really fun to have this relaxed environment.”

Offset sued over missing Bentley – Music News

Rapper Offset is at the centre of a new legal spat over a missing Bentley.

Bosses at Platinum Transportation Group in Los Angeles are reportedly suing the Migos rapper over the disappearance of the luxury motor, which he rented last year.

According to the documents, obtained by TMZ, PTG executives claim they drew up a contract with Offset in May and rented him a 2020 Bentley Bentayga for a couple days. This term was extended until late July.

But in early July, Offset told PTG he no longer had the car in his possession.

The car bosses also claim Offset stopped making payments on the car after his lease was up on 25 July, despite failing to return the vehicle, and filed a police report.

The Bentley bosses are seeking major damages.

The 29-year-old star is a big fan of luxury cars, and in December was gifted a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ 63 Roadster, one of just 63 made by the Italian car manufacturers, for his birthday by his wife Cardi B. The motor carries a price tag of $600,000 (£447,000).

Cardi received a custom Rolls Royce SUV from Offset for her 28th birthday in October.

The Weeknd is set to work with Meduza – Music News

The ‘Blinding Lights’ hitmaker – who performed the Super Bowl LV Half Time Show on Sunday (07.02.21) – has contacted the production trio about collaborating on his next single.

Mattia Vitale – who makes up the Italian songwriting group with Luca de Gregorio and Simone Giani – told the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column: “We are in contact with a few people, from The Weeknd to John Legend.

“It’s not easy at the moment. When sessions are on Skype or Zoom, it takes more time. But we’ve been doing that and maybe we’ll get the studio with the later.”

Mattia – whose group are currently enjoying success with ‘Paradise’ featuring Dermot Kennedy – also weighed in on the Grammy Awards controversy after The Weeknd blasted the ceremony for snubbing his album ‘After Hours’.

He said: “He deserves it, but it doesn’t mean if you don’t get a Grammy you’re not a good artist.

“If I was him I’d remember, ‘OK, it’s just a game, you know. People love my music and people are sharing my music’ – that’s the most important thing.”

However, The Weeknd – whose real name is Abel Tesfaye – recently insisted his previous Grammys now “mean nothing” to him after the snub.

The 30-year-old singer won Best Urban Contemporary Album for ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’ in 2016, while claiming Best R&B Performance for ‘Earned It’ the same year.

Then, in 2017, his third record ‘Starboy’ saw him win the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album again.

He explained: “Look, I personally don’t care anymore. I have three Grammys, which mean nothing to me now, obviously.

“It’s not like, ‘Oh, I want the Grammy!’ It’s just that this happened, and I’m down to get in front of the fire, as long as it never happens again.

“I suck at giving speeches anyways. Forget awards shows.”

The Supremes’ Mary Wilson dies aged 76 – Music News

The Supremes star Mary Wilson has died aged 76.

According to her publicist Jay Schwartz, Wilson – a co-founding member of The Supremes – passed away “suddenly” at her Las Vegas home on Monday night. A cause of death has not yet been announced.

Reacting to her death, Motown label founder Berry Gordy said in a statement: “I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of a major member of the Motown family, Mary Wilson of the Supremes… I was always proud of Mary. She was quite a star in her own right and over the years continued to work hard to boost the legacy of the Supremes. Mary Wilson was extremely special to me. She was a trailblazer, a diva and will be deeply missed.”

Wilson had shared a YouTube video announcing her intentions to work on new music just two days before her death. She had told her fans that she’d teamed up with Universal Music on some solo tracks, and had hoped they would be released on her birthday – 6 March.

She was an original member of The Supremes, alongside Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, and featured on all 12 of the band’s chart-topping hits from 1964 until 1969, including Stop! In The Name of Love, You Can’t Hurry Love, Baby Love, and You Keep Me Hangin’ On.

Wilson also appeared on U.S. TV talent show Dancing With the Stars in 2019.

She’s survived by daughter Turkessa, son Pedro Antonio Jr., and her grandchildren.

Westlife split from their record label – Music News

The ‘What About Now’ hitmakers – made up of Shane Filan, Markus Feehily, Kian Egan and Nicky Byrne – have parted ways with EMI over two years after the release of their 2019 album ‘Spectrum’, which topped the charts in the UK and featured five songs written by Ed Sheeran.

A spokesman for the band told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “They’ve agreed a mutual parting of ways with EMI and details of a new and groundbreaking partnership are imminent.

“The next 18 months are shaping up to be the band’s busiest, including a new album, sold-out stadium shows — featuring a first show at Wembley Stadium — plus their biggest-ever global tour, which will include their first-ever American shows.

“The band are also considering opportunities for a spectacular end-of-year TV show and a documentary special.”
The news comes almost a year after the Irish band had to cancel their planned UK stadium shows – which were due in June and July 2020 – due to the coronavirus pandemic.

They said at the time: “We have been monitoring the UK government advice surrounding mass gatherings and it is very clear that this is the course we need to take to ensure the protection of our fans, our crew and everyone around us but also to ease pressure on those working tirelessly to fight this virus.

“Those who have been on the Westlife journey with us know how important performing is to us but also know that safety must come first and foremost in delivering a successful tour.

“Our promoters are currently working with their ticketing partners and they will be in touch very soon to process your refund. Please look out for an email from your ticketing agent shortly. Please only contact them if you have not been contacted by May 5th.”

Dolly Parton drops perfume ad during the Super Bowl – Music News

The 75-year-old country music icon promoted her new fragrance, Dolly Scent From Above, during the third quarter of the NFL showpiece at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ultimately defeated the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The Squarespace commercial aired featuring the ‘Jolene’ singer performing a new take on her mega-hit ‘9 to 5’ called ‘5 to 9’.

She sings: “Working 5 to 9, you’ve got passion and a vision.”

Dolly captioned a clip of the ad on Instagram: “Work #5to9 on your passion projects with the help of @squarespace! Visit the link in my bio and tune in to the #SuperBowl this Sunday #ad (sic)”

The ‘Island In the Stream’ hitmaker’s fans can get their hands on samples of the scent for $10, which can be used as credit towards the purchase of a full-size bottle when it goes on sale in July.

The fragrance – which comes enclosed in a rose pink bottle with a butterfly for a lid – boasts notes of mandarin, pear, jasmine, and patchouli.

Dolly has long-dreamed of releasing her own perfume.

A statement on the website for the product reads: “Having my own perfume has always been a dream of mine. For as long as I can remember, people have commented on my scent. ‘What are you wearing?’, ‘What is that fantastic smell?,’ and ‘Where can I get it?’ are all questions I have heard daily for more years than I can remember.

“The truth is, I have been blending my own scent for years. It’s a combination of bath oils, powders and perfumes that have become my “signature” and is known everywhere I go. It’s time for me to share this with you. I hope you enjoy!”

Dolly previously revealed she would be releasing a perfume with Edge Beauty as she is set to launch her own beauty line.

She said: “Fragrance has always played a major role in my life—I wear my own combination of scents every day. “Developing my own brand and scent with Edge Beauty has been an amazing experience, and I am looking forward to becoming a big part of the fragrance community.”

Edge Beauty boss, Steve Mormoris, explained that they would offer a unique way for customers to try out the fragrance before they buy it, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, when testers aren’t available in stores. On how they’ve adapted, he added: “We know that people like to scent their hair, clothes, homes, as well as their own skin. “So we’re working on a multiplicity of olfactory forms that will indicate the fragrance value. Consumers will be able to try the fragrance through discovery-size vials at an accessible price prior to the purchase of a full size, because if someone doesn’t want to leave their home but wants to try the fragrance, and there aren’t testers in stores, then we have to adapt.”
