Katy Perry: ‘Pandemic is pushing people to follow their dreams’ – Music News

Katy Perry has insisted the COVID-19 crisis has a silver lining – it’s given wannabe performers a push to chase their dreams.

The American Idol judge is currently at work on the latest season of the long-running talent show, which premieres on Valentine’s Day, and admitted the latest talent pool, which emerged from a difficult 2020, is sweeter than ever.

“I think we’re all living in this weird, wild, crazy moment where a lot of our dreams have been put on hold,” the new mum explained during an appearance on Live With Kelly & Ryan.

“I think a lot of the contestants said to themselves, when they clicked a Zoom link to audition, ‘I have nothing to lose’,” she went on, musing: “because nothing is promised. We don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow so (they think), ‘I’m just going to go and swing for my dreams’.”

Perry continued: “So that means the floodgates were open… Nobody was busy. They were just ready to take a hold of their dreams.”

And she’s thrilled, too, that American Idol is really commanding respect from other leading lights in the entertainment industry.

“It (the show) just keeps getting better and better,” she smiled.

“I think people (in the business) trust us, and artists especially and real musicians especially, not just great singers but people with the whole package,” she remarked, proclaiming: “and that really is what defines an American Idol – because it’s not called American Singer. You’ve got to check so many different boxes and that’s what these kids are coming out and doing.”

Sir Elton John calls for ‘short-term fix’ making it easier for British musicians to tour Europe – Music News

The ‘Tiny Dancer’ hitmaker has spoken out after musicians were left out of the Brexit trade deal, meaning they may have to acquire visa for every European country they wish to perform in, a policy which critics fear mean may lead to such a large rise in costs, artists will be unable to afford to play in the EU.

Branding the current situation “ridiculous”, Elton wrote for The Guardian newspaper: “Either the Brexit negotiators didn’t care about musicians, or didn’t think about them, or weren’t sufficiently prepared.

“They screwed up. It’s ultimately down to the British government to sort it out: they need to go back and renegotiate.”

With Elton acknowledging that “renegotiating freedom of movement is complicated and is going to take a lot of time”, he called for a “support organisation” to help young artists navigate the new difficulties, particularly now when the coronavirus pandemic has provided a “window of opportunity” to get something in place while live music is still on hold.

He said: ” If you’ve just made your first album, and you’ve got that fresh momentum building behind you, it’s no use waiting for two or three years before you tour – you have to catch that energy while it’s on fire, you have to go out and play, and you have to take yourself to as many different audiences as possible.

“What musicians need now is a short-term fix. We should set up a support organisation, funded partly by the music industry itself, where artists who don’t have the kind of infrastructure that I benefit from can access lawyers and accountants to help them navigate the touring problems created by Brexit.

“The pandemic has put a stop to live music in the immediate future, so we should use the window of opportunity we have now to set this support organisation up.”

And the 73-year-old music legend felt it’s his own biggest critics who should support his campaign more than anyone else.

He wrote: “if you hate every note I’ve recorded, because your tastes are edgier, weirder and more exploratory – if you think that the Parisian hotdog thrower had a good point – you need to support musicians’ ability to tour.

“Because if Brexit prevents many new musicians from touring, the only artists who are going to have any meaningful kind of live career are big, august, mainstream artists like me. And, trust me, I don’t want that any more than you do.”

The issue is due to be debated in parliament on Monday (08.02.21) after over 280,000 musicians and music fans signed a petition calling for new negotiations with the EU.

Anne-Marie’s friend told her she stinks of garlic – Music News

The ‘Don’t Play’ singer has confessed she uses so many cloves of the pungent plant in her cooking that she can no longer smell it, and she “embarrassed” her pal when they went shopping and she reeked of the stuff.

Anne-Marie – who started growing her own vegetables in lockdown – told the ‘Off Menu’ podcast: “Garlic is one of my favourite things in the whole world. I use it so much when I’m cooking that I no longer smell it.

“When we were allowed to be out, me and my friend went shopping – she always cusses me out for smelling like garlic.

“So we were out shopping, she kept saying to me, ‘God you smell of garlic’.

“And she has perfume with her all the time, and we were in a shop and she walks past me and coughs and I was like, ‘What just happened there?’.

“She actually sprayed her perfume on me and coughed at the same time, hoping I wouldn’t hear it spray out, just because she was embarrassed that I smelt of garlic.”

The 29-year-old pop star also revealed she could only eat cheese bagels for years because of her food fears.

The ‘Ciao Adios’ hitmaker admitted her parents were so worried about her as she struggled to eat anything but the sandwiches whilst she was growing up as she had a fear of being sick.

She said: “My mum and dad went to the doctors because they were worried that this was the only thing I was eating. I would have cheese sandwiches for lunchtime then come home and have two cheese sandwiches for dinner. I wouldn’t eat any vegetables or fruit. My dream meal is a Philadelphia bagel. Just cream cheese, no butter. In two bagels I will eat the whole tub. I feel like my whole life I have had this eating thing because I have this phobia of vomit. So I have never wanted to try anything. I am so terrified of it. I think that’s why subconsciously I can’t experiment with food.”

Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani poke fun at first date in new advert – Music News

Newly-engaged Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani have poked fun at the start of their romance in a new T-Mobile TV ad.

In the commercial, which debuted during the Super Bowl on Sunday, Gwen calls the pair’s mutual pal Adam Levine to tell him she’s ready to start dating again after her marriage break-up.

But Gwen’s request for a “cultured” guy from out of the country is misunderstood by Adam due to bad network reception, and Adam sets her up with his then-fellow The Voice coach, Blake.

When Blake heads to dinner with Gwen, she quickly makes it clear he’s not the type of guy she had in mind, poking fun at his cowboy spurs and asking if he arrived on a horse.

But she appears more than interested when her date asks if she needs a ride home.

In real life, Gwen and Blake met on The Voice, when the Hollaback Girl singer signed on as a coach for the show in 2014. The pair confirmed they were dating in November 2015 and became engaged in October last year.

Gwen was previously married to musician Gavin Rossdale, while Blake split from his second wife Miranda Lambert in the summer of 2015.

Bruce Springsteen calls for unity in first-ever commercial – Music News

Bruce Springsteen called for unity in his new advert for Jeep – his first-ever commercial campaign.

In the commercial, which debuted during the Super Bowl on Sunday, Bruce is seen driving his own Jeep around Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska, as his voiceover explains the need for the world to band together.

“All are more than welcome to come meet here in the middle,” he says. “It’s no secret the middle has been a hard place to get to lately, between red and blue, between servant and citizen, between our freedom and our fear.

“Fear has never been the best of who we are. We just have to remember the very soil we stand on is common ground. So we can get there. We can make it to the mountaintop, through the desert… and we will cross this divide.”
He concludes: “Our light has always found its way through the darkness. And there’s hope on the road up ahead.”

The advert was shot over five days in January, with Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau telling Billboard that the singer was involved in “every shot” of the clip.

As for whether Bruce will star in more adverts going forward, or allow his tunes to be used for campaigns, Landau replied: “This doesn’t open or close the door. If we see something that we think might be great and the time is right, and we like the people we would be working with, it’s always possible.”

Springsteen’s ad was among the most-watched Super Bowl ads on YouTube after Sunday’s game – beaten only by Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan’s advert for Amazon, where he starred as the embodiment of Alexa, according to Gameday Views (Global) figures.
