The Kooks: ‘The way we dressed was genuinely a challenge to our own personal safety at times!’ – Music News

The ninth episode of My Classic Album featured an exclusive interview with British indie-pop heroes The Kooks on their shimmering quadruple platinum debut album ‘Inside In/Inside Out’. Hosted by radio presenter and journalist Tina Edwards, the episode is Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris embark on a personal exploration of the whirlwind of being catapulted to fame as a teenager, at a time when major labels were trying to snap up guitar bands left right and centre and the ‘musical conversation’ happening between the UK and USA.

Reminiscing on handing their demo CD to the local pub landlord to leaving school, touring with The Thrills and being signed ‘far too quickly’, the band found themselves with teamed up legendary producer Tony Hoffer (Beck, The Thrills, M83) – who managed to harness and capture their wild live energy with “How do you give a band ‘a sound’ that within the same song play ska, indie and all at once!”

Looking back on the record as an adult, Luke ruminates on how the sees the in new ’emo perspective and recognises influences like The Smith that weren’t obvious at the time “in the lyrics and in my vocal takes, there’s a lot of teen angst..it’s a lot of growing pains and I would never have put us in an ’emo category at the time and I think that’s cool – I’m really happy about that”

Hugh adds”As a teenager or a young person, putting your heart and soul on the line, stepping out and being creative..it’s terrifying to be exposing yourself in that way”. As well as looking back on the ‘time capsule’ that was the indie explosion of around 2006, being maligned in the press and giving the ‘something to prove’ to the extent where “the way we dressed was genuinely a challenge to our own personal safety at times!”.

As the album which kicked off The Kooks 15 year career and with an enduring legacy of six smash hit singles, ‘Inside In/Inside Out’ has stood the test of time as a classic album fay beyond its contemporaries – from one of Britain’s indie music explosion. In Luke’s words “make yourself a white russian, put on a straw hat, play it freaking loud!”.

Josh Groban’s ultimate dream cover is Unchained Melody – Music News

Josh Groban dreams of one day recording his own version of classic song Unchained Melody, although it could be years before he feels up for the “challenge”.

The You Raise Me Up hitmaker recently checked off another bucket list track by recording The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, made famous by Roberta Flack, for his latest covers album, Harmony, but he has revealed there’s one famous record he has always hoped to revamp.

“I have a bucket list song that I have not yet recorded, which is Unchained Melody, that I want to sing at some point…,” he shared on Today. “I think it’s probably one of, if not the, best love songs.”

However, Groban insisted it’s not a cover he will be rushing into, because he wants to find the perfect way to make it his own, while also paying homage to The Righteous Brothers, who turned the Todd Duncan tune into a big hit in 1965.

“It’s one of those ones where you know the original so well, and that’s a big challenge for a singer, what on earth are you gonna do that both honours the original and also allows you to do your own thing to it?” he said, admitting it’s the same reason he also waited a while to record The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.

“So that’s why sometimes I wait a couple decades, because I just don’t feel ready! It’ll happen, it’ll happen,” he added.

R. Kelly receives second dose of Covid-19 vaccine – Music News

Disgraced R&B star R. Kelly has reportedly received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine while behind bars.

TMZ reports Kelly recently received his second shot of the jab and is now fully inoculated.

Kelly is one of 63 inmates at Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center to be given both vaccine doses to date, along with 128 staff members, according to officials at the Bureau of Prisons.

The I Believe I Can Fly singer, who has been locked up in his native Chicago since 2019, is believed to have received the first dose of the vaccine in January.

He is currently awaiting trial on child pornography counts, as well as separate racketeering and sex trafficking charges in New York.

Kelly’s lawyers have previously tried and failed to secure his release on bail due to concerns that he risked contracting Covid-19 in prison.

Last year his attorneys requested an early release and an “evidentiary hearing” after the singer was allegedly beaten at the Chicago jail last summer, which apparently left the singer with “significant physical and psychological injuries”. However, a judge ruled that the incident did not warrant an immediate release.

The musician’s New York trial was recently postponed from April to August, while he will be back in Chicago in September to face the child pornography case there.

Rag’n’Bone Man avoided writing songs about divorce from ex-wife Beth Rouy – Music News

The ‘Human’ hitmaker – who welcomed his first child, son Reuben, with his former spouse in September 2017 – has admitted he’s fed up of “break-up songs” and didn’t want to channel his heartbreak from his marriage split into his upcoming second studio album, ‘Life By Misadventure’.

In an interview with The Telegraph newspaper, he confessed: “I’m bored of break-up songs. I don’t want people to listen to my music and think how depressing it is. So, when I was feeling a bit sorry for myself, I just hung my head and thought, ‘I’m not going to write anything for a bit, because it’s just going to turn out sad and pathetic.’ There’s more to be said. There are other things to write about.”

The 36-year-old singer-songwriter – whose real name is Rory Graham – did attempt to write songs for his little boy, but admitted they turned out to be too “sickly”.

He laughed: “It’s hard not to be sickly about parenthood. I wrote five or six other songs for Reuben that I trashed, just threw in the bin. They were horrible.”

Rory and Beth tied the knot in 2019, but split just 10 months later, after a decade in a relationship.

However, the pair “still get on really well” and the ‘Giant’ hitmaker – who releases his follow-up to 2017’s acclaimed ‘Human’ on April 23 – insisted their son hasn’t “suffered” as a result of their divorce.

On becoming a father, he said: “You might think having a child, or getting married, is the right thing to do for the next step in your life, but maybe it’s not the problem-solver. It doesn’t make everything OK.”

But the ‘All You Ever Wanted’ singer added: “For some reason it changed everything for the worse. I’m not bitter. Beth is an amazing mum, we still get on really well, my son hasn’t suffered, and as long as there’s no loss of love, it’ll be OK.”

Charli XCX has teased she’s ‘forming a supergroup’ with The 1975 and No Rome – Music News

The ‘forever’ singer, the Matty Healy-fronted group and their Dirty Hit label mates have been teasing fans about their upcoming collaboration for some time, and now Charli has seemingly suggested there could be more music from them.

She tweeted: “v excited to be forming a supergroup with @no_rome and @the1975… (sic)”

Last month, No Rome gave an update on their track, writing on Twitter: “ok some news – me, (the creator of music) charli xcx & the 1975 have a song together. . got the masters done and waiting on video edit cuts . coming out sooner than u think ok thats all for now i love u … just thought i’d share cos im gassed as f*** . life is a little weird rn but Hey Got some Lovin for Music xx (sic)”

And Charli replied: “sounding good boys (sic)”

Back in August 2019, ‘Somebody Else’ hitmaker Matty revealed to fans that he had sent a “beat” to ‘Gone’ singer Charli and shared that it’s a “monster tune”.

He tweeted at the time: “Sent her a beat at like 5pm yesterday and woke up this morning to a HIT.
A MONSTER TUNE!!

I’m prolific but she’s on some s***
@charli_xcx (sic)”

And when asked whether his band or himself will feature on the track, Matty said that he didn’t know and added that No Rome and his bandmate George Daniel worked on the song.

He replied: “Not sure yet but me and Rome and George produced.”

Charli also confirmed a collaboration was in the works.

She said: “We sent some ideas back and forth, and I’m such a fan of [Matty] and the band. They just get it, and they don’t get it at the same time, which I think is the best way to make music. And I think he’s such a smart lyricist, it’s just very smart and also fun, and I feel like they really love pop music.

“And I love that, and I’m so inspired by that energy and that uniqueness. So yeah, I don’t know what’s going on. But I really admire their song writing, so hopefully something will come of it.”

At this time, no further information has been revealed about the supergroup, such as their band name.
