Taylor Hawkins: ‘Foo Fighters debut blew me away’ – Music News

Taylor Hawkins jumped at the chance to become the drummer in the Foo Fighters after hearing the band’s impressive debut album.

Dave Grohl released his post-Nirvana album in 1995 and Hawkins, who was performing with Alanis Morissette at the time, was “blown to smithereens” by the record, so when he got the chance to join the group two years later, he didn’t hesitate.

Hosting a Medicine At Midnight Radio session on Apple Music Hits, the rocker says, “I just couldn’t believe how perfect it was. It was Dave’s voice. Obviously, his drumming was great and his guitar playing was awesome, and the songs were fun and energetic and funny without being jokey and fun without being light.

“And (song) This Is A Call was just such a call to the Foo Fighter arms. It was definitely the sound of someone going, ?’You know what? F**k that. I’m not going down like this. I’m going to f**king do my thing’. Everyone that heard that first Foo Fighters record, if you are a rock fan, just went, ‘Oh yeah, this guy’s got a second act’. And I was lucky enough to jump on that second act.”

The Foo Fighters recently released their 10th studio album, Medicine At Midnight. They are also among the acts shortlisted for induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.

Kacey Musgraves trolling lawmaker Ted Cruz with new charity T-shirt – Music News

Kacey Musgraves has raised $50,000 (£36,000) and counting for relief efforts in her native Texas by creating a new T-shirt poking fun at under-fire state Senator Ted Cruz.

The politician is facing calls to resign after he was caught jetting off to vacation resort Cancun, Mexico with his family on Wednesday to escape the aftermath of Winter Storm Uri, which had left hundreds of thousands of Texas residents without heat and electricity, and for some, clean water, while facing freezing temperatures.

The shamed Republican senator flew back to Texas on Thursday night to face the uproar, admitting it was “obviously a mistake”, and now Kacey has decided to sell a new piece of merchandise taking a dig at Cruz’s controversy – all in the name of charity.

The Follow Your Arrow hitmaker first teased the idea on Twitter on Thursday, quipping to her fans, “Link coming soon. Don’t RUN OFF anywhere…”

Hours later, she returned with a website link to the white T-shirt, which features the phrase, “Cruzin’ for a Bruzin'”.

“Texas is cold, I can be cold,” she wrote alongside the tweet, a play on the lyrics to her track Slow Burn, in which she originally sings, “Texas is hot, I can be cold”.

The shirts, priced at $29.99 (£21.55) are only available to purchase until Sunday, with all proceeds benefitting local charities such as Feed The People Dallas, and the American Red Cross of Central & South Texas.

Alongside the site listing, Kacey notes she isn’t actually asking for people to be beaten up: “No actual bruisings plz (sic),” she pleaded.

By Friday morning, the musician revealed her novelty item had already helped her raise $50,000 for good causes.

“Life gave us lemons and I’m honestly just here innocently serving lemonade,” she posted.

Katy Perry shares support for Halsey on pregnancy journey – Music News

Katy Perry has encouraged Halsey to enjoy every stage of her pregnancy because her body’s gearing up to “perform a real miracle”.

Halsey took to Instagram on Thursday to share a series of photos of herself and the foods she’s been eating, as she reflected on her journey to motherhood so far.

“February is the shortest month, but the days seem like they are taking very long. Butttttt also going so fast?!” she began her caption. “I’ve been thinking lots about my body. it’s strange to watch yourself change so quickly. I thought pregnancy would give me very strong, binary feelings about ‘womanhood’ but truly it has leveled my perception of gender entirely (sic).”

Halsey continued, “My sensitivity to my body has made me hyper aware of my humanness and that’s all. Doing a remarkable thing. And it’s grand. I hope the feeling lasts. I cook a lot, sleep even more, and read lotssss of books. I miss my family. And you guys too! bye for now (sic).”

She then added in a comment, “I thought there would be a lot of expectation or pressure on me to wake up everyday feeling like some ‘girly-girly fertility goddess’, but instead I wake up and eat when I’m hungry, sleep when I’m tired, and focus on growing a human. And that is all I expect myself to do. Liberating (sic)!”

The singer, who is expecting the baby with her boyfriend Alev Aydin, was flooded with messages of support from her followers, including Perry, who became a first-time mum to daughter Daisy in August.

“You’re about to perform a real miracle, get that rest and just be! I love you!” the Firework hitmaker remarked.

Halsey went public with her pregnancy in late January.

Dolly Parton shuts down statue plans – Music News

Dolly Parton has vetoed a bill to erect a statue of the country queen outside the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville.

The Jolene singer has urged lawmakers to drop the idea because she doesn’t think it’s a good idea for right now.

Tennessee House of Representatives member John Mark Windle first proposed the statue plan last month, and the measure passed in the Naming & Designating Committee. It was headed to the State Government Committee for further approval when Parton herself put the brakes on the idea.

In a statement released on Thursday, Dolly thanked the lawmakers for considering the bill, revealing she was “honored and humbled by their intention”.

However, she admitted: “given all that is going on in the world, I don’t think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time.”

She went on: “I hope, though, that somewhere down the road, several years from now or perhaps after I’m gone, if you still feel I deserve it, then I’m certain I will stand proud in our great State Capitol as a grateful Tennessean,” adding: “In the meantime I’ll continue to try to do good work to make this great state proud.”

Windle wanted to honour Dolly with a statue to mark her 75th birthday and all the singer’s contributions to her home state, including the Imagination Library, theme park Dollywood, and a recent $1 million (£720,000) donation to Vanderbilt University’s COVID-19 research that assisted in the development of the Moderna vaccine.

Billie Eilish requests protection from camping fan – Music News

Billie Eilish has sought protection from a man she claims is harassing her.

The singer has a real life bad guy she claims has been threatening her outside her Los Angeles home and she has filed legal documents seeking a restraining order.

Eilish alleges John Hearle has even taken to camping on the grounds of a school across the street from her pad and sends her disturbing letters.

According to the documents, obtained by TMZ, one note read: “You can’t get what you want, unless what you want is to die for me.”

The disturbing message went on: “You will know that soon the water will rise, and you might very well die…You will die.”

Eilish added she feels anxious every time she comes home, and she fears for her safety, as she claims Hearle watches her enter and exit her house. She also reported that he always says something to her or makes gestures, including a throat-slitting move, whenever he sees her.

If the case is successful, Eilish wants a judge to force Hearle to stay at least 200 yards away from her and her parents at all times.

Meanwhile, police officials are investigating Hearle.

Marilyn Manson officially under police investigation – Music News

Rocker Marilyn Manson is officially under investigation for domestic violence in Los Angeles.

A day after reports suggested authorities were planning to meet with at least one of the singer’s abuse accusers to determine if there are grounds for a criminal probe, it has been confirmed a case file has been opened.

A spokesperson for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department told TheWrap.com: “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Special Victims Bureau is investigating allegation(s) of domestic violence involving Mr. Brian Warner also known as ‘Marilyn Manson,’ who works in the music industry.”

They added: “the incidents occurred between 2009 and 2011 when Mr. Warner lived in the city of West Hollywood.”

The timeline indicates the initial investigation revolves around allegations made by Manson’s ex-fiancee, actress Evan Rachel Wood, who was engaged to the Rock is Dead star for seven months in 2010.

She named the musician as her abuser in a candid Instagram post on 1 February, claiming he began “grooming” her and “horrifically” abusing her when she was 18 and he was 36.

“I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission,” Wood wrote.

Several other women, including Game of Thrones actress Esme Bianco, have since come forward with similar abuse claims, all of which Manson, now 52, has denied, calling them “horrible distortions of reality”.

Shortly after the scandal hit headlines, Manson was dropped from his record label, management, and talent agency, and was axed from two TV shows.

Sir Elton John losing weight during lockdown – Music News

Sir Elton John has embarked on a fitness and diet regime to help him shed the pounds during the lockdown.

The Rocket Man star’s filmmaker husband David Furnish gave an interview to Good Morning Britain (GMB) on Friday about lockdown life with the music legend during which he touched on Elton’s health journey.

Speaking to GMB’s Richard Arnold he divulged: “(Elton) has embarked on a fitness regime and a diet, he’s been losing weight, he’s been looking after himself really, really well.”

He continued: “We’ve been really busy, happy and fulfilled and also, more important than anything, spending more time together as a family and loving it.”

Furnish detailed how the time has drawn the couple closer together.

“We work together at home, we produce his radio show, we get on really well, we just enjoy each other’s company and we’re happy as a family. I want my kids to go back to school,” he shared.

Asked if their children have experienced any negativity for having two dads, he explained: “We’ve been very fortunate within their school and within their community everybody’s been really warm, really welcoming to us, treated us the same as any other family, so they’ve not witnessed any of that.”

The 73-year-old I’m Still Standing hitmaker recently appeared in a public service ad, filmed at London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, to encourage people to get the COVID-19 vaccine. And noting his husband was a recent recipient of the jab, Furnish said: “It’s a big load off my mind obviously.”

James Newman returns to represent the UK in Eurovision Song Contest 2021 – Music News

James Newman has been confirmed as the artist representing the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 after the competition was postponed in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 65th Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in May 2021, and the United Kingdom song will be revealed in March 2021.

James Newman is a hugely successful BRIT Award-winning and Grammy-nominated songwriter. James won a BRIT for British Single of the Year for Waiting All Night, performed by Rudimental and Ella Eyre. He has also written hit singles Lay It All On Me performed by Rudimental ft Ed Sheeran, Blame performed by Calvin Harris ft. John Newman, and Therapy, performed by Armin Van Buuren and James Newman. Last year James co-wrote My Last Breath with acclaimed British songwriters Ed Drewett, Iain James and Adam Argyle which was the song entered by the UK in last year’s competition before it was postponed. James released his debut EP ‘The Things We Do’ in Summer 2020 and ended the year with another new collaboration with Armin Van Buuren, ‘Slow Lane’

The BBC also announces the renewed collaboration between BBC Studios and music company BMG for this year’s contest. The song will be released and published by BMG, and BBC Studios will once again produce the BBC’s coverage of the biggest and most watched song competition in the world.

James Newman says: “I’m so excited and honoured to be getting a second chance at representing my country in the Eurovision Song Contest. I haven’t stopped making new music in lockdown and I can’t wait for everyone to hear the song I’m taking to Eurovision in 2021.”

Jo Wallace, Acting Controller Entertainment Commissioning for the BBC, says: “We are so pleased to have James back with us and representing the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2021. After 2020 and the postponing of the 65th song contest Eurovision is exactly what everyone needs!”

Mel Balac, Creative Director for BBC Studios, says: “James has really embraced being part of the Eurovision family and team ESC UK are delighted that he is getting another shot at Eurovision.”

Alistair Norbury, President, Repertoire & Marketing UK for BMG, says: “BMG are delighted to continue our involvement with Eurovision and to remain in partnership with the BBC. As soon as 2020 was cancelled we immediately turned our attention to returning with James but with a brand new song. There is definitely a strong feeling of unfinished business!”

Following a process in 2019 in which BBC Studios approached a number of record labels to pitch, it was clear that BMG shared the BBC and BBC Studios’ vision of selecting a song with broad international appeal and securing an artist who embodies the spirit and values of the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final will take place on Saturday 22 May in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and will be broadcast live on BBC One with commentary by Graham Norton; and live on BBC Radio 2 with commentary from Ken Bruce. Ken Bruce will be also be previewing Eurovision on his Radio 2 show from 9.30am-12 noon on Friday 21 May. The semi-finals will be held on Tuesday 18 & Thursday 20 May, broadcast live on BBC Four.

As one of the Big Five countries (United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France, Italy), the United Kingdom does not have to qualify from the semi-final stage of the competition and will gain automatic access to the Saturday Grand Final. The Netherlands, as the incumbent champion, will also not need to qualify from the semi-final stage and will gain automatic entry to the Grand Final.

The BBC’s Eurovision coverage is a BBC Studios production, commissioned by Jo Wallace, Acting-Controller of Entertainment. The Executive Producer and Head Of Delegation is Andrew Cartmell, and the series producer and Assistant Head of Delegation is Lee Smithurst. Suzy Lamb is the MD for BBC Studios Entertainment and Music and Mel Balac is the Creative Director. The Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Rachel Ashdown.
