Sia: ‘My heart has always been in the right place’ – Music News

The 45-year-old star has faced a huge backlash over her film because she cast Maddie Ziegler in the titular role of an autistic teenager, instead of someone neuroatypical, but she strongly believed before the criticism that she’d researched the project and represented the condition well.

She said: “I wasn’t able to talk to everybody that’s on the spectrum. So I thought I had done a really amazing job. I thought I had done thorough research, and it turned out there’s a whole lot of people that want the exact opposite.”
The ‘Chandelier’ hitmaker initially cast an actor with autism but the role proved too stressful for her so she brought her frequent collaborator into the project instead.

She told Sunday Times Culture magazine: “I got Maddie back on board. I’ve learnt I’m ableist.

“And while I may have spoken to 20 factions of the autism community, I didn’t speak to another 20 factions. I actually didn’t even know the other 20 existed.”

Sia has defended her decision to cast Maddie in the film on multiple occasions and previously insisted it was more “compassionate” to hire her than an autistic actress.

She tweeted: “I did try. It felt more compassionate to use Maddie. That was my call…

“I cast thirteen neuroatypical people, three trans folk, and not as f****** prostitutes or drug addicts but s as doctors, nurses and singers. F****** sad nobody’s even seen the dang movie. My heart has always been in the right place.(sic)”

And Sia also insisted she simply couldn’t work without Maddie.

She said: “I realised it wasn’t ableism.

“I mean, it is ableism I guess as well, but it’s actually nepotism because I can’t do a project without her. I don’t want to. I wouldn’t make art if it didn’t include her.”

Maddie – who has starred in many of Sia’s music videos, including the promos for ‘Elastic Heart’ and ‘Chandelier’ – feared people would think she was “making fun” of autistic people.

Sia insisted: “I bold-facedly said, ‘I won’t let that happen.'”

However, she realised she cannot “protect” her from the criticism.

The ‘Unstoppable’ hitmaker added: “Last week, I realised I couldn’t really protect her from that, which I thought I could. We sent it off to the Child Mind Institute and she received 100 per cent as performance accuracy. I realise that there are some things I can’t protect her from as much as I try.”

Machine Gun Kelly wears necklace containing Megan Fox’s blood – Music News

Machine Gun Kelly wears a drop of girlfriend Megan Fox’s blood around his neck.

The rapper took to Instagram to share a snap of his unusual necklace, which featured a transparent casing with a smudge of red seen inside.

“I wear your blood around my neck,” the Bloody Valentine star captioned the image, as well as some other pictures of himself and Megan.

Kelly follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton, who wore vials of each other’s blood as necklaces during their three-year marriage in the early 2000s.

Meanwhile, Megan also shared a Valentine’s tribute to her other half, who she started dating last summer following her split from husband Brian Austin Green.

“There goes my heart, manifest outside of my body, draped in the towering silhouette of a most unusually handsome boy, magical and haunted, kinetic and tortured, ethereal and dangerous, cosmic, lawless, eternal, creative genius, the journey will likely be perilous, but there is no destination without him,” she wrote besides more snaps. “Happy valentine’s day rehab barbie.”

And Brian also seized the opportunity to pay a romantic tribute to his new partner, Dancing with the Stars professional Sharna Burgess.

In an Instagram Live session on Sunday, the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star explained: “This has been kind of a weird year for me so what an amazing Valentine’s Day this has been. Sharna is a really amazing, considerate, loving, kind person… This could be the start of something amazing.”

Megan, who shares three children with Brian, filed for divorce in late November.

Mariah Carey releases seven-minute We Belong Together as Valentine’s Day treat – Music News

Judge rules Pharrell Williams didn’t commit perjury in Blurred Lines case – Music News

A judge has ruled that Pharrell Williams didn’t commit perjury in his copyright infringement battle over his Robin Thicke collaboration Blurred Lines.

The two artists were sued by Marvin Gaye’s heirs in 2015, claiming they copied the late singer’s 1977 track Got to Give It Up for Blurred Lines. Williams and Thicke denied the accusations, but they lost the case, and the Motown legend’s estate officials were initially awarded a massive $7.4 million (£5.6 million) reward, before it was later reduced to $5.3 million (£4 million).

Williams opened up about the high-profile legal battle in a 2019 interview with GQ magazine in which said that when he finds a song he likes, he “reverse engineers” the feeling he gets from listening to that tune.

“I did that in Blurred Lines and got myself in trouble,” he admitted.

Gaye’s relatives jumped on the remark, arguing it proves Williams perjured himself after previously declaring of the creation of Blurred Lines: “I did not go in the studio with the intention of making anything feel like, or to sound like, Marvin Gaye.”

The Gayes demanded the judge overseeing the case reconsider the amount of attorneys’ fees to which they are entitled, but Williams fought back, insisting his GQ comments are consistent with evidence he previously gave to the court.

And on Friday, U.S. District Court Judge John Kronstadt ruled that Williams hadn’t committed perjury with the GQ interview.

“The statements by Williams during the November 2019 Interview were cryptic and amenable to multiple interpretations,” Judge Kronstadt wrote. “For example, it is unclear what Williams meant by ‘reverse-engineer(ing).’ Read in context, Williams’ statement about ‘reverse-engineering’ could be interpreted as a process in which he remembers his feelings when listening to particular music, and then attempts to recreate those feelings in his own works. This is not inconsistent with his deposition testimony, in which he claimed that he realised after creating Blurred Lines that the feeling he tried to capture in the song, was one that he associated with Marvin Gaye.

“For these reasons, the Gaye Parties have not shown by clear and compelling evidence that there are sufficiently material inconsistencies between Williams’ statements in the November 2019 Interview and his sworn testimony, to support a finding of perjury.”

Williams has yet to respond to the ruling.

Russ Thyret, Former Warner Bros. Records Chairman/CEO, Passes At 76

russ-stevie-2021.jpg

Russ Thyret & Stevie Nicks

RUSS THYRET, who reigned as one of WARNER BROS. RECORDS top executives during the BURBANK-based label’s glory years, including a stint as Chairman/CEO from 1995 to 2001, passed away FRIDAY morning after a long illness at the age of 76.

Over the course of his fabled three-decade-long career with the label, THYRET worked in sales, marketing and promotion.  WARNER BROS. was the only record label THYRET ever worked at.

THYRET originally brought PRINCE to the label after hearing about the young phenom from then-manager OWEN HUSNEY and a local MINNEAPOLIS promotion man.

THYRET first joined WARNERS in 1971 as a national sales rep from the L.A. branch of WEA, serving under legendary executives MO OSTIN and LENNY WARONKER, When those two stepped down amid company-wide turmoil, THYRET restored some measure of normalcy at the company when he was named Chairman/CEO in 1995, signing R.E.M. to a new deal as one of his first moves.

THYRET left the company after the completion of the $106 billion merger between TIME WARNER and AOL, a deal that led to several management changes at the combined company.

Said longtime WARNER BROS. publicity chief BOB MERLIS, “Along with MO OSTIN, I cannot think of any executive who commanded such a level of loyalty among his staff than RUSS did. He believed in his people and they, in turn, believed in him.”

ALL ACCESS Pres./Publisher JOEL DENVER recalled, “RUSS was nothing short of an amazing music executive who was blessed with terrific ears, a fiercely loyal promotion team and an uncanny knack for making things happen in the moment. Truly a great friend to so many in the music business and at radio. RUSS, your friendship, amazing personality and business savvy will never be duplicated.”

RUSS is survived by his longtime wife, the former REBECCA ALVAREZ, a secretary at WARNER BROS. who also worked in management with STEVIE NICKS, and son RUSS THYRET, JR.  A memorial service has yet to be announced.

Shia LaBeouf double dated Sia & FKA twigs – report – Music News

Sia has accused Shia LaBeouf of double dating herself and FKA twigs.

The Chandelier singer previously called out the troubled actor for allegedly conning her “into an adulterous relationship claiming to be single” after twigs, real name Tahliah Debrett Barnett, filed a lawsuit against Shia for abuse and sexual battery in December, and now the Australian star has confirmed she was unaware she was part of a bizarre love triangle with the former couple.

After admitting she was “hurt emotionally” by the actor, calling him a “pathological liar”, Sia told The Sunday Times: “it turns out he was using the same lines on me and Twigsy, and eventually we found out because we ended up talking to one another.”

She went on: “both of us thought we were singly dating him. But that wasn’t the case. And he was still married.”

Shia was reportedly married to actress Mia Goth.

Sia claimed Shia told her he wanted to marry her “and live a sober life”, adding: “I feel like I’m always gonna love him because he’s such a sick puppy.”

Shia, who recently checked into a rehab facility to tackle a series of personal issues, previously responded to Barnett’s allegations, stating: “I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel. I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations.”

Acknowledging he had been “abusive to myself and everyone around me for years” the star admitted: “I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt”.

He also insisted “many of these allegations are not true”, but accepted he owed the women “the opportunity to air their statements publicly and accept accountability for those things I have done”.

Meanwhile, Shia’s lawyers recently responded to Barnett’s suit, stating their client “denies, generally and specifically, each and every allegation contained in Plaintiff’s Complaint, denies that Plaintiff has sustained any injury or loss by reason of any act or omission on the part of client (LaBeouf), and denies that Plaintiff is entitled to any relief or damages whatsoever.”

Nicki Minaj’s father killed in hit and run – report – Music News

Nicki Minaj’s father, Robert Maraj, has reportedly been killed in a hit-and-run in Long Island, New York.

Nassau County Police officials confirmed Maraj’s death to TMZ on Sunday, revealing the 64-year-old was walking in Mineola on Friday evening when he was struck by a vehicle.

He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and died over the weekend.

The Anaconda hitmaker, who has often shared photos with her dad on social media, has yet to comment on the shocking news, but a representative for Nicki has confirmed her dad’s death to the outlet.

Local authorities have asked witnesses to come forward, so they can bring the driver who fled the scene to justice.

The sad news comes just five months after the rapper gave birth to her first child with husband Kenneth Petty.
